A former executive of bankrupt Oudenaarde-based Belgan is in jail on suspicion of spying for China. He worked for 12 years at imec, the Leuven-based chip research centre. Intelligence expert Kenneth Lasoen (University of Antwerp) calls the case a textbook example of a Chinese tactic involving “mirror companies”. They appear legitimate but can be used to channel knowledge and technology.
