Belgium has more castles per square kilometre than any other country in the world. There are over 3,000 of them, from medieval keeps to 19th-century country houses. The density comes from centuries of shifting borders: rival powers each fortified the same small stretch of land. Many are still lived in privately, which is why you will pass one from the train without ever seeing a sign.
