The highest natural point in Belgium is the Signal de Botrange, in the High Fens. It reaches 694 metres. Not 700 — 694. In 1923, somebody decided that was six metres too few. So they built the Butte Baltia: a stone mound with a staircase and an orientation table on top. Climb it and you stand at exactly 700 metres. Belgium got its round number the honest way — by building it.
