In 2016, UNESCO added Belgian beer culture to its Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Not a single beer. The culture: the brewing, the glasses, the cafés, the place it holds in daily life. Belgium brews well over a thousand different beers. Nearly every one has its own glass, and a bar is expected to serve it in that glass. Trappist is a protected designation: brewed inside monastery walls, under the monks' supervision.
