Francken wants mandatory military service to instill discipline

Belgian Defence Minister Theo Francken (N-VA) is proposing to reintroduce mandatory military service. In a message posted on Facebook on Tuesday, he said it would help instill rigor and discipline in young people, amid protests in schools. Economist Stijn Baert, however, pointed to several major obstacles to the initiative.
