Commission wants new EU members under oversight for 15 years

The European Commission wants to be able to strip new EU member states of their voting rights for up to 15 years after accession if they undermine the rule of law or democracy, or fail to cooperate loyally. The measure is intended to prevent a repeat of Hungary under Viktor Orbán. Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan understands the concern but wants Moldova to join as a full member in 2030.
