How the 'Dutch reach' prevents cyclists hitting open car doors

A woman was critically injured in Antwerp when she collided with a car door that swung open. According to traffic institute VIAS, several hundred similar crashes occur in Belgium each year. Motorists can help prevent such collisions by checking carefully first and using the so-called 'Dutch reach': opening the door with the hand farthest from it.
